Salmon fishing in the river Ätran
The river Ätran is the classic salmon water on the Swedish west coast. The history of the salmon fishing in Falkenberg reaches far back. Game angling started in the middle of the 19th century when wealthy Britons and Americans came to Falkenberg to fish for salmon. A well-known attorney from London, W M Wilkinson, wrote in 1884 in his book Days in Falkenberg: "Such fishing can not be seen at any other river that I have heard of, neither in Norway nor Canada.
The Ätran with its tributary the Högvadsån has a genuine salmon stock that is well worth protecting. It is virtually unaffected from cultivation etc. Thanks to an extensive care of the fishing and water, the wild salmon has succeeded to remain. Ätran has been chosen as an index river by Fiskeriverket and Högvadsån is within the Natura 2000 program.
